The basics
- Ten across four en-suite bedrooms. Peacock and Hornbill take three guests each, Barbet and Sparrow take two.
- Either works. Book a single room and you share the living room, dining room and lawns with whoever else is staying that night. Book all four and the house is yours.
- The living room, the dining room and the lawns. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, so those are never shared.
- The main kitchen is run by our caretaker and isn't open to guests, so breakfast is the one meal taken care of for you each morning. There's a kitchenette for heating food and making your own tea or coffee. For lunch and dinner, Swiggy delivers to the property from most restaurants in town, a few restaurants deliver directly, and the caretaker is happy to help you order.
- Yes. A caretaker lives on site and is available at any hour. That is who to find for meals, hot water, directions or anything that isn't working.
- Tea gardens run down the hill in front of the house to the south, and that view follows you indoors more than you'd expect. Even the top-floor bathrooms look out over the same hills as the bedrooms.
- Yes, throughout the house. Mobile signal on Elk Hill depends on your carrier, so Wi-Fi tends to be the more dependable option.
- Yes, free and on site.
- The property has power backup, so lighting and essential points stay on through the outages that hill stations occasionally get.
- Ooty is cool year-round and genuinely cold from December to February. Every bed has a warm quilt, every bedroom has a blower heater, and the living-room fireplace is a real, working one for the evenings everyone gathers there.
- Pets aren't allowed at the property, for the comfort of the other guests staying alongside you.
- No, smoking isn't permitted anywhere on site, indoors or outdoors.
Booking & policies
- Villa Verde is set up for families and groups travelling together, so we don't take bookings from bachelor groups. A solo traveller booking a single room for their own staycation is always welcome.
- Check-in from 1:00 PM, check-out by 11:00 AM. Early check-in or late check-out can sometimes be arranged depending on the calendar, so ask before you arrive.
- The exact terms appear at checkout and depend on the rate you pick. If you booked through Airbnb or another platform, that platform's policy applies instead.
- No platform markup on the price you see, and a direct line to us for anything unusual. The house is the same either way. There's a fuller comparison on the Why Book Direct page.
Families & accessibility
- Three kilometres, roughly seven minutes by car. Elk Hill puts you in the quiet without putting you far from anything. A chemist run, a restaurant booking or a school pickup is a short drive rather than an expedition.
- Yes, and there is a play area with a climbing wall, rings, swings and a rope course. It isn't a supervised playground, so an adult needs to be around. The same goes for the glass-fenced balcony off the living room.
- Longer stays are welcome and are one of the things this house is good at. Lawrence School is about five minutes away by car, close enough that you can spot its main mast from the property, and Good Shepherd and the other schools around Ooty aren't far either. Families visiting often want more than a weekend, and the proximity makes a week here workable rather than remote.
- People do. Wi-Fi is reliable, the caretaker handles meals, and town is seven minutes away when you need something. Ask us about rates for longer stays.
- No, not comfortably. Villa Verde is a two-storey house built into a hillside, so getting between floors means stairs (Peacock and Barbet are upstairs, Hornbill and Sparrow are on the lower floor), and there are also some steps and slopes between the parking area and the entrances. If you have specific mobility needs, message us and we'll talk through what's realistic before you book.
Getting here
- Most guests drive or take a taxi from Coimbatore, which is about three hours away and has the nearest airport. We can arrange a taxi on prior request. If you're driving from Bangalore, Mysore or the nearby Kerala towns, the usual route in is via Masinagudi or Gudalur. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam is the slower, prettier way in. Either way, it helps to have a vehicle at the property itself for getting around the hills.
- The Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake, Doddabetta Peak and the Shooting Point are all short drives from Elk Hill. The Explore page has more on what's worth the trip and what isn't.
Food & daily life
- Nothing to prepare in advance. The caretaker will walk you through the few simple house customs, like shoes off at the door, when you check in, and there's a printed handbook in the house for anything else.
- Sightings are rare, much like anywhere else in the Nilgiris. If something does wander close, admire it from a distance and let the caretaker know.
Weather & packing
- Layers and a warm jacket, whatever the month. Closed shoes if you plan to walk. Something for rain between June and September. Nights sit near or below 10°C for much of the year and colder in midwinter.
- April to June is the classic season and also the busiest, so book early. September to November brings clearer views of the hills with fewer people. December can turn properly cold. The monsoon months are wet but the landscape is at its greenest.
